Dr. Niharika Amireddy, PhD

Postdoctoral Associate

Dr. Amireddy is a neuroscientist with over seven years of research experience spanning mitochondrial biology, autophagy, and neurodegeneration. Her doctoral training at CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology focused on mitochondrial uncoupling and a tophagic clearance of α-synuclein in Parkinson’s disease, where she identified the AMPK-JNK signaling axis as a mechanism of neuroprotection and demonstrated that the FDA-approved anti-helminthic drug nitazoxanide mitigates experimental Parkinsonism in mice, directly establishing my interest in drug repurposing and pharmacological intervention. Her postdoctoral work at Rutgers University and, currently, at the University of Kentucky has centered on cypin (guanine deaminase) as a regulator of disease progression in multiple tissues. Dr. Amireddy was awarded a Gatton Postdoctoral Fellowship in Diabetes and Obesity Research in 2026.
